Budget for expenses that do not exist on a routine basis. Make sure you consider expenses that occur once a year, such as holiday gifts, birthdays, holidays, weddings, maintenance costs for cars, etc. These costs do not occur every month and your budget plans will be wide open to bust. Create a calendar list of these occurrences and put a dollar figure on them. Place them in the month that they are supposed to happen so that you can schedule how you are going to pay for them. The routine expenses are not the reason your budget will fail. It is these “gotchas” that will wreck your budget if you don’t plan for them.
